Painters who fix drywall, and why that matters

Most painting companies will fill a nail hole. Fewer will cut out a water stained ceiling, hang a new piece, tape it, float it, texture it and paint it so you cannot find the spot. Our Google profile lists drywall contractor as a category next to painting, because that second kind of job is normal here.

It matters because a lot of what looks like a paint problem is a drywall problem wearing paint. A ceiling stain, a soft spot behind the toilet, a crack that keeps opening above a door, a hole where a towel bar pulled out. Paint over any of that and you get a room that looks finished for about a week.

Doing both means one visit and one schedule. The repair does not need a separate trade and a second appointment, and the paint goes on over a repair that was done knowing it was about to be painted.

Holes, seams and popped nails

A small hole from a doorknob or a picture anchor gets a patch and two or three coats of compound, each one feathered wider than the last, so light does not catch a ridge. A bigger hole gets cut square, backed with a strip of wood or a piece of board, and a new piece fitted, then taped and floated out.

Cracks along a seam mean the tape has let go. Filling the crack alone lasts a month. The seam gets opened, retaped with mesh or paper, and floated out wide. Cracks above doors and windows are common in Florida because that is where the framing moves, and they get the same treatment.

Popped nails and screws are the round bumps in a line up the wall. The fastener gets driven back or pulled, a new screw set nearby, and the spot floated. They show up most in older Pinellas homes where the framing has dried and shrunk over decades.

Water damage, and what has to happen first

Water is the most common reason to call about drywall in this county. A roof leak, an AC line backing up, a window that failed in a storm, a tub overflow upstairs. The board goes soft, the paper bubbles, and a brown ring spreads on the ceiling.

The leak has to be fixed before the drywall is. Patch and paint over wet board and the stain comes back through in weeks, and mold grows behind it. If the board is still soft or damp when we look, we will say so and tell you what needs to happen first.

Once it is dry, the damaged board comes out back to sound material, a new piece goes in, and the stain on anything that stays gets a stain blocking primer. Regular primer does not hold a water stain back, and that is the reason a repainted ceiling stain reappears.

Texture, and making the patch vanish

Texture is what gives a repair away. Nearly every wall and ceiling in Largo, Seminole and Pinellas Park carries knockdown or orange peel, and the older ones have popcorn ceilings. A smooth patch on a textured wall is visible from the doorway, and it looks worse after paint than before because it catches light differently.

Knockdown gets sprayed or hand applied and then knocked flat at the right moment. Orange peel is sprayed in a fine splatter. Both take practice to match the pattern next to them, and a patch matched well is one you have to hunt for.

Then the patch gets primed. Joint compound is porous and drinks finish paint faster than the painted wall around it. Skip the primer and the patch shows as a dull shape no matter how many coats go over it. Priming is the step that separates a repair from a reminder.
